So, Jonathan had to leave the hotel this morning at 8 a.m., and I could tell he overslept from the rushed opening of Space bags over and over. and over. and over again. I don't think I've ever realized how loud those things really are when you unzip, zip, deflate; unzip, zip, deflate. I woke up for the two seconds it took him to give me a goodbye smooch, telling myself, 'O.K., it's 8 a.m., I can sleep for a couple more hours and still make breakfast (a.k.a. cafe de manha in Portuguese) before it ends at 10:30 a.m. WRONG.
When I woke up, it was still pitch dark in our room, apparently from the fabulous wooden window shades we have been blessed with. The good 'ole Ipad stated a whopping 12:15 p.m.! Whoops.
I organized the hotel room a bit, and I put my swimsuit on for a day of practicing Portuguese note cards while lying by the pool for a couple of hours.
At the pool bar, I ate "bolo" for lunch (this means cake in English...who cares, I wasn't that hungry, and I wanted a piece of cake, so that's what I ordered...yes, she chuckled and said, "OK, senhora."). I ate the cake with a juice made of pineapples and mint....mmmmm.
After eating, I picked out a lounge chair to sunbathe in (for a short period of time, Danyel, I promise). About twenty minutes into my tanning session, a pool boy came to my chair with a huge umbrella to block me from the sun. I looked at him and said, "Nao. Gusto un sol, obrigada :)." (No, I like the sun, thank you.)
He looked at me, shrugged his shoulders and said, "O.K."
Well, now I know why:
I spoke with the front desk and told the clerk that was working that it didn't make sense, I was only out there for 2 1/2 - 3 hours, which in the United States, wouldn't burn me like that. He literally laughed at me and said that anything over 30 minutes to an hour in Brazil is dangerous. Whoops.
When Jonathan arrived back at the hotel (the sweet man brought me aloe), we went to dinner with some of the people from the Mogi Morim field station. In Brazil, they do not eat large suppers before bed, they eat appetizer-like servings and have drinks -- their biggest meal is lunch during the day. So, the table ordered various appetizers, one of which was going to be calamari (I overheard them talking this over).
When the waiter brought the dishes to our table, one of them was put in front of me, Jonathan, and the station leader at Mogi Morim. I assumed it was the calamari and commented, "Wow, this is the best calamari I've ever had."
Kent, the station leader responded, "That's because it's chicken." And of course, Jonathan doubled over in laughter.
Once again, whoops.
Look, it was fried and I assumed it was calamari -- but apparently the calamari was on the other end of the table.
Ahhh, another day in our current paradise :).... tomorrow, it is hello Uberlandia!
Tomorrow say hello to Uberlandia with an umbrellia!
ReplyDeleteYou call 2 1/2-3 hours a "short period of time"?? I'm with Tabitha. I think you should spend the next 8 WEEKS under the umbrella.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you have a blog while you're down there. You crack me up!!! It's been like 2 days and only the stuff that has gone "wrong" would happen to you!!! Love yall!

ReplyDeleteI love it! Your trips are always eventful! I forgot to tell you about the sun down there before you left! You are close to the equator dear one and can do alot of damage to your fair skin---like 3rd degree burns in a very short time period.......I did and my skin is dark.
